RAPID POS Project Toolkit V3.0
November 20, 2009
Now with the NRF-ARTS RFP Framework inside, the RAPID POS Project Toolkit is a methodology to facilitate POS hardware and/or software replacement for retailers. As most retailers keep their POS systems 5-15 years, the people that were involved in the last POS planning exercise are usually no longer available for this next generation project. In addition there are undocumented features that have crept into the current system that need to be included and a new vision for what the latest technology can provide is required. The POS RAPID Toolkit is comprised of templates and tools for RAPID scope definition of a project, development of an RFP, vendor selection and project execution, resulting in a typical 12 week reduction in the RFP process while ensuring all functional requirements and vendor selection occurs via a comprehensive and thorough process.

Long Checkout Lines: Tech To The Rescue?
August 24, 2009
I read a WSJ article last week that left me scratching my head. A friend drew my attention to Carl Bialik's (The Numbers Guy) article, "Justice Wait for It on the Checkout Line." The story addressed growing frustration with supermarket wait times, and to his credit, Bialik sought insight from retail insiders Lee Holman (IHL group) and Jody Smith (Q-Matic). The article tackles the psychology of waiting, and it explores a few means of distracting shoppers from, or changing the environment of, the wait. The author ultimately settles on acceptance of a single-line system a-la banks and airport check-in counters; wait in queue for the next available teller.... [ More ]

Justice -- Wait for It -- on the Checkout Line
August 19, 2009
In the evolution of techniques to speed shoppers to checkout, most supermarkets are near the back of the line. While Americans spend relatively little time in queues, a wait they perceive as too long or unjust could curtail repeat purchases. To combat this, some retailers and fast-food restaurants have gone the way of banks and airports, shuttling customers into a single line where the person in front goes to the next open cash register. Other retailers are dabbling in technological upgrades to improve the waiting experience with updates on wait times or pleasant distractions. ... [ More ]
